2D shapes are flat shapes with only two dimensions — length and width — and no thickness or depth. Common 2D shapes taught in KS2 include triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, octagons and circles. Children are expected to name these shapes, describe their properties (sides, vertices, angles, symmetry) and compare them to 3D shapes.

2D shapes by KS2 year group
Year 3: Naming and Describing Shapes
In Year 3, children learn to recognise and name common 2D shapes, count their sides and vertices, and begin to identify right angles within shapes.
Year 4: Classifying and Comparing
Year 4 builds on this by classifying shapes according to their properties, including identifying lines of symmetry and comparing acute, obtuse and right angles found in 2D shapes.
Year 5: Regular and Irregular Polygons
Year 5 introduces regular and irregular polygons, distinguishing shapes by equal sides and equal angles, and reasoning about missing angles using known facts.
Year 6: Properties and Reasoning
By Year 6, children are expected to draw shapes accurately, use given dimensions and angles, and reason about the properties of shapes to solve problems, including illustrating and naming parts of circles (radius, diameter, circumference).
