Get ready to explore the exciting world of volume and capacity in Year 5! At KwizEd, we’ll help you understand how much space things take up (volume) and how much they can hold (capacity). Our engaging worksheets and quizzes, along with helpful word problems, will guide you on your volume adventure to become a true champion!
Our worksheets come with clear and detailed answers to support your learning every step of the way. Try our quizzes for a fun way to test your understanding and boost confidence. This is a great resource for revision and building a solid foundation in measurement.
What is Volume and Capacity?
Volume is the amount of space that a substance or object occupies, or that is enclosed within a container.
Capacity is the amount that a container can hold.
Understanding volume and capacity helps us in many everyday situations, such as:
- Measuring liquids for cooking and baking.
- Understanding the size of containers and packaging.
- Calculating how much space is in a room or object.
- Solving practical problems involving filling and emptying containers.
What You’ll Explore with KwizEd:
- Understanding the units used to measure volume (e.g., cubic centimetres ($cm^3$), cubic metres ($m^3$)).
- Understanding the units used to measure capacity (e.g., millilitres (ml), litres (l)).
- Recognising the relationship between units of volume and capacity (e.g., 1 litre = 1000 cubic centimetres).
- Solving word problems involving volume and capacity.
- Comparing the volume and capacity of different objects and containers.

Become a 3D Detective with KwizEd Maths! (Year 5)
Uncover the Secrets of Cubes, Cuboids, and Other 3D Shapes!
Calling all detectives! Get ready to explore the exciting world of 3D shapes in Year 5. At KwizEd, we’ll help you understand what 3D shapes are, focusing on cubes and cuboids. You’ll learn about their important features like vertices, edges, and faces. Can you spot the cube, cone, or cylinder in a line-up? Become a true 3D detective with us!
Discover the fascinating world of edges, faces, and vertices. Solve shape challenges and learn to spot these shapes in the real world all around you. Our engaging resources will make learning about 3D shapes an exciting adventure!
What are 3D Shapes?
3D shapes, also known as three-dimensional shapes or solids, are shapes that have length, width, and height. They take up space and have volume. Unlike 2D shapes which are flat, 3D shapes have thickness.
Some common 3D shapes include:
- Cube
- Cuboid
- Cone
- Cylinder
- Sphere
- Pyramid
In Year 5, we’ll be focusing particularly on cubes and cuboids, but we’ll also learn to recognise other common 3D shapes.
Key Features of 3D Shapes:
- Vertices: These are the corners where edges meet. (Singular: vertex)
- Edges: These are the lines where two faces meet.
- Faces: These are the flat surfaces of a 3D shape.
Let’s Investigate Cubes and Cuboids:
Cube:
- A cube has 6 square faces that are all the same size.
- It has 12 edges that are all the same length.
- It has 8 vertices.
- Think of a dice or a sugar cube!
Cuboid:
- A cuboid has 6 rectangular faces. Opposite faces are the same size.
- It has 12 edges.
- It has 8 vertices.
- Think of a brick or a cereal box!
Can You Spot These Shapes?
Become a super spotter! Learn to recognise these common 3D shapes:
- Cone: Has a circular base and tapers to a point (vertex). Think of an ice cream cone or a party hat.
- Cylinder: Has two circular bases that are parallel and connected by a curved surface. Think of a can of soup or a rolling pin.
- Sphere: A perfectly round shape where every point on the surface is the same distance from the centre. Think of a football or a marble.
- Pyramid: Has a polygon base and triangular faces that meet at a common vertex (apex). Think of the pyramids in Egypt.
Your 3D Detective Missions:
- Counting the number of vertices, edges, and faces on different 3D shapes.
- Identifying cubes and cuboids from a group of shapes.
- Spotting cones, cylinders, and other 3D shapes in pictures and real-life objects.
- Solving shape challenges and puzzles.
